The Rectors’ Conference

10-13 October 2016

Brussels & Leuven

“Transfer of Technology &

Commercialisation of Knowledge:

infrastructure, processes & success

factors”

Universities are known to fulfil two key missions: education and research. Today the third mission is added to the list - knowledge transfer. Research and innovation address societal challenges. Thus, the transfer of knowledge is a social task, making sure that what comes out of the university is of benefit to society.

The University of Leuven was the pioneer establishing the structured collaboration between the academia and industry in 1972. Today the KULeuven ranks among the world’s most productive universities in technology transfer. Between 2005 and 2014, industry contracts, licensing and patents generated nearly €1.4 billion in revenue for the university. The university also has nurtured and taken a stake in 105 spin-outs, that raised €675 million in external capital over the past decade, including seven initial public offerings. 87 spin-outs are still active employing some 4,200 people.

The Universities from all over the world come to Leuven to study the successful experience of creating the knowledge commercialisation infrustructure. It is no wonder that the high level delegation from three Kazakhstan Universities also came to the heart of Europe to learn on the example of the KULeuven how to establish the technology transfer from the Universities to business in their regions.
